Greater Internet Freedom (GIF)

Digitally Right’s work under the Greater Internet Freedom (GIF) project addressed critical digital rights challenges in Bangladesh. In Year 3, the organization convened key stakeholders in a co-learning session to identify major issues like surveillance, legal ambiguities, online harassment, and digital inequality. A focused workshop with 14 journalists revealed gaps in newsroom support and highlighted the urgent need for tailored digital safety training, legal awareness, and mental health support to counter pervasive surveillance and legal threats.

Building on these foundations, Year 4 saw expanded efforts to enhance digital security and advocacy. Digitally Right conducted a thorough digital security audit based on the SAFETAG framework to strengthen internal cybersecurity measures. It then delivered targeted Digital Safety Trainings to at-risk journalists, equipping them with practical skills in secure communication, device protection, and privacy management. The organization also hosted advocate gatherings to build a collaborative network of digital rights defenders across sectors, fostering sustainability and peer support.

On the advocacy front, Digitally Right partnered with ICNL to facilitate an in-depth workshop on the Draft National AI Policy, enabling civil society to strategize on influencing digital legislation. The organization launched a high-impact campaign, “Safe Internet for Women,” addressing gender-based online violence through awareness and policy engagement. Additionally, Digitally Right localized critical digital rights materials into Bangla to improve grassroots access. A concluding co-learning session with diverse stakeholders helped chart future directions for digital rights advocacy amid evolving legal and political landscapes.

Through these coordinated activities, Digitally Right strengthened Bangladesh’s digital rights ecosystem, empowering at-risk groups and advancing inclusive, rights-respecting internet governance.
